The Distillates Tasting #17: The Spirit of Calvados with Guillaume Drouin

Getting access to spirit straight from the cask at Drouin, a multi-generational calvados house, was an adventure. Getting the head of the house to agree to join us on zoom, even more so.

The first spirit I ever fell in love with was pommeaux. And as I transitioned to older age statement calvados (french apple brandy), I found a spirit that was a brother from another mother to epic oaky whiskies. Guillaume Drouin, the third generation head of Maison Drouin, has a background in winemaking as well as experience in the rum industry in Haiti before joining the family Calvados business in 2004. Given, that, we can take this almost anywhere. From wild fermentation, to the impact of seasonality and different cider aging techniques, to the journey building an export business, this should be a dynamic, engaging conversation. And he speaks english!!! So we can have a deep convo as a group and won’t get slowed down by my translations.
