Apero Sponge! A Pineau des Charentes composed from equal parts 1975 and 1975/1980.
Pineau des Charentes is a blend of grape must with grape distillate – typically Cognac eau de vie. This blend is then aged in casks for a number of years, but not usually as many as this one.
This is one of the wee ‘end of Sponge’ projects that has been kicking around, dragging its heels a little bit, but thankfully it is here now and we are delighted to present it to you.
Please be warned: this drink is insanely sweet. Sweeter than a barrel of candy floss dissolved in a liter of 100 year old PX sherry! It contains no less than 467 grams of residual sugar and if you stand the bottle up on its head, it will probably take about a fortnight to empty.
That being said, it is an incredibly fun and delicious old example of top quality Pineau. It has immense sweetness, but also beautiful sticky dark fruity goodness, some acidity (somehow) and amazing rancio flavour. If you would like to have something delicious to sip with cheese that leaves you with a month-long sugar rush, look no further... ".
